How to plan a Lower East Side food stop

Use format and timing—not a universal ranking—to choose between historic counters, daytime cafes and a wider downtown meal.

The Lower East Side works especially well when food is one part of a walking itinerary. Houston Street, Orchard Street and the surrounding blocks put established food businesses close to museums, shops, bars and neighboring Chinatown, but service styles vary dramatically.

Start by deciding whether the group wants counter service, takeaway or a seated meal. That distinction is more useful than comparing star ratings across businesses designed for different occasions. A famous deli and a daytime appetizing cafe can both be good choices while solving completely different problems.

Verify closing times before traveling, particularly for daytime businesses. If the first choice has a long wait, keep a second format in mind rather than searching for a supposedly identical substitute.

Planning checklist

  • Choose counter service or seated dining first.
  • Check daytime last-seating times.
  • Combine the meal with a realistic walking route through the neighborhood.
